I liked the remake, and that the story and puzzles were faithful but I wonder if someone who wasn't a fan of the original would find it appealing. Large complicated maps, sometimes can feel a bit empty and comes with lots of backtracking. Inventory management UX could use some work. ![]() Combat can feel a bit dull, because it's mostly the same kind of combat as the 1994. Enemy AI is very simple and easy to exploit. Buttons are often difficult to see on walls you might skip an area because you thought you cannot progress because you couldn't tell there's a button from clutter ![]() There's lots of junk items with (almost) no purpose that you can pick up. I was decent, but I think it was _too_ faithful to the original in some ways: I was a kid and could not read English and did not understand what's going but had tons of fun. On both, there is some shader cache stuttering at times, but it’s not bad at all, and the framerate blips are minor while it happens.The old System Shock was the first 3D game I played in my life. In terms of how it performs on desktop Linux, I tested it on Fedora 37 (KDE spin) and it performs very well on maximum settings there as well. ![]() They still need to work on the new controller support a little bit more, as the acceleration and sensitivity on the thumb-stick are wildly off, but it’s a good start. I gave it a try on Steam Deck and was pleasantly surprised I expected a game like this to perform poorly given that it’s a demo of an unfinished game, but even on Medium details, it runs surprisingly well. It’s unclear whether they’ll continue to produce a Native Linux version. To play it on Linux / Steam Deck, you must go into the Properties -> Compatibility menu and force Proton, as they’ve left up an apparently old Linux launch configuration that’s just empty and downloads nothing. After going through development hell and being delayed for a long time, Nightdive Studios has released a new demo of their System Shock remake, which includes controller support and a new intro. ![]()
